You were exhausted at eleven. It is now half past midnight and you are extremely awake, doing arithmetic about how many hours are left.

What it is

An oral sleep spray you use under the tongue before bed, rather than a capsule you swallow. The formula combines melatonin, GABA and 5-HTP with a herbal blend of valerian root, hops flowers, passionflower and skullcap. It is manufactured in the USA in an FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facility and third-party lab tested. Vegan, non-GMO, gluten free and no sugar.

How it works

Under the tongue, not through the stomach

A capsule has to get through your stomach and your liver before any of it reaches you, which is slow and inconsistent depending on what you ate. A sublingual spray goes onto the tissue under the tongue, which is thin and heavily supplied with blood vessels, so absorption starts there instead of at the end of a digestive queue.

What is in it splits into two jobs. Melatonin is the timing signal — it is what your own body releases as light drops, and supplementing it is about telling your system that night has started, which is why it matters more for a shifted schedule than for a bad mattress. GABA and 5-HTP sit on the calming side of the formula, and the herbal blend — valerian, hops, passionflower, skullcap — is the traditional end of it, the same plants that have been in bedtime teas for a very long time.

The other advantage of a spray is that you control the amount by the spray rather than by the capsule. Follow the serving size printed on the bottle, and if you are new to melatonin, start at the low end of it.

How to use it

  1. Shake the bottle — 5 seconds. Do this every time; the herbal extracts settle.
  2. Spray under the tongue — 10 seconds. Use the serving size on the label, hold it under the tongue for about 30 seconds before swallowing, and do this roughly 20 to 30 minutes before you intend to be asleep.
  3. Then actually go to bed — 20 minutes. Lights down, phone away. A sleep spray taken while you keep scrolling is a sleep spray wasted.

What’s included

  • One bottle of DriveOn™ Oral Sleep Spray with a metered spray applicator

Formula: melatonin, GABA, 5-HTP, and a proprietary herbal blend of hops flowers, passionflower, skullcap and valerian root. Vegan, non-GMO, gluten free, no sugar.

Who this is NOT for

Do not take this if you are pregnant or nursing, and it is not for anyone under 18. Talk to your doctor before using it if you take antidepressants or any medication affecting serotonin — 5-HTP is a genuine interaction to raise with a prescriber, not a footnote. The same goes for blood thinners, blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, sedatives, or if you have an autoimmune condition or a seizure disorder. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and do not combine it with alcohol. This is a supplement: it does not treat, cure or prevent insomnia, sleep apnea or any other condition, and persistent sleeplessness that has lasted months deserves a doctor rather than a bottle. If your problem is a partner snoring, a hot room or a 4am toddler, no spray will fix any of those.

Common Questions

How is a spray better than a melatonin tablet?

Mostly speed and control. Sublingual absorption begins under the tongue rather than waiting on digestion, and you dose by the spray rather than by whatever size the tablet happens to be, which matters because more melatonin is not automatically better.

Will I feel groggy in the morning?

Some people do and some do not, and the usual cause is taking more than you need or taking it too late. If you wake up foggy, take fewer sprays within the label serving and take them earlier in the evening rather than at the moment you get into bed.

How long before it works?

Plan on roughly 20 to 30 minutes, which is why the instruction is to take it before you get into bed rather than after you have failed to fall asleep. It also works better when the room is dark, because you are supporting a signal your body is already trying to send.

Can I take it every night?

Many people do, but if you find yourself needing it every night for months, the useful question is what is actually keeping you awake. Raise it with a doctor rather than raising the dose.

What does it taste like?

It is a flavoured spray with no sugar. It is a small amount of liquid held under the tongue for half a minute, so taste is not really the point, but it is not unpleasant.
